Former world number one Garbine Muguruza is unexpectedly trounced during the 2019 Indian Wells quarterfinals by Bianca Andreescu.

Young up and coming Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu wins an incredible match over former world number one Garbine Muguruza. The 18-year-old Canadian completes a massive upset, defeating Muguruza with ease during the quarterfinals at Indian Wells. Andreescu knocks out the tournament’s 20th seed in women’s singles, winning 6-0, 6-1.

We did not see this one coming. After a strong opening win over American Lauren Davis, Muguruza went on to take down American tennis legend Serena Williams in the round of 32. Williams retired while Muguruza was ahead 6-3, 1-0 during their match.

Then, Muguruza knocked out seventh seeded Kiki Berterns in a hard-fought three set thriller. It is a relative unknown in Andreescu, however, who delivers the final blow to one of the absolute best women’s singles tennis.

Andreescu must carry her newfound momentum into her next match though. She takes on current WTA Finals champion Elina Svitolina in the semifinals next at Indian Wells. Svitolina is the tournament’s sixth seed this year.

She has played tough matches so far but emerged on top in all of them. Her opening round win came against rising American star Sofia Kenin. Another key win came over Australian Ashleigh Barty in the round of 16. Both matches took three sets to complete.

Svitolina could be a strong pick to win the titles in women’s singles at Indian Wells. The other semifinals matchup will be determined by the winners of two huge meetings. The first is between Belinda Bencic and Karolína Plíšková. The second is between Venus Williams and Angelique Kerber. No matter who rounds out the other two of the final four, the women’s singles action is sure to feature some of the sport’s very best.
