Indian Wells Recap: Men’s and Women’s Singles Champions

Action at Indian Wells is all wrapped for 2019. Let’s take a look at who won the finals action in both men’s and women’s singles.
Dominic Thiem and Bianca Andreescu are both smiling big time this week following their 2019 Indian Wells wins. Thiem, a rising ATP star for the past several years makes headlines by dethroning one of the tournaments most accomplished champions. Roger Federer entered the finals as a slight favorite over Thiem despite struggling somewhat in recent months.
Federer has maintained his place toward the top of the sport even with the surging Novak Djokovic as of late. After Rafael Nadal withdrew due to an ongoing knee issue in the semifinals, Federer saw a chance at yet another title in men’s singles at Indian Wells.

It is Thiem who emerges victorious though. The Austrian takes down the Swiss legend in a fantastic three set thriller. He wins 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, coming back to beat Federer. The match win marks the third time throughout his career that Thiem has bested Federer.
Looking at their career head to head, the Austrian is now 3-2 against arguably the greatest to ever play the sport.
Thiem is without a doubt someone to watch on the 2019 ATP Tour. Take a look at some other rising stars in men’s singles today and check back to see how they all fare in the upcoming months.
On the women’s singles side of the action, we saw a veteran great go up against a relative unknown rising star in the s port. Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu takes down a former world number one in Angelique Kerber during their finals meeting. What an incredible win. Andreescu takes the match in three sets, fighting hard to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Back and forth it went and the 18-year-old completed a dream run at Indian Wells.
Now all eyes turn toward the Miami Open. Thiem will need to prove that he can go even higher in the men’s singles ranking in the coming weeks and months. The young Canadian champion is now one of several must watch WTA stars in 2019. Federer and Kerber can both take plenty of positives away from their finals runs at Indian Wells.
