Early Winners and Losers at 2019 Miami Open Qualifying

Action at the 2019 Miami Open is underway this week. Here’s an early look at the first round of winners and losers during qualifying.

The Miami Open, or Miami Masters, is one of the most exciting tournaments on both the ATP Tour and WTA Tour. Last year’s champion in men’s singles is American John Isner. Another American in Sloane Stephens is also the current women’s shingles champion. Prior to the dominance by the United States, Serbian great Novak Djokovic and Swiss legend Roger Federer were the players to beat. They ought to be tough to contend with this year…

Qualifying is going down this week in Miami. Let’s start by taking a look at some of the early round winners and losers in both the men’s and women’s singles side of the field.

One player to highlight is French tennis veteran Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Coming in as the 22nd seed in men’s qualifying, Tsonga wins his opener, defeating Lukáš Rosol 6-3, 6-4.

The French tennis star takes on a tough opponent in the seventh seeded qualifier Pablo Cuevas next at the Miami Open. Keep an eye on their matchup.

Other early qualifying winners on the men’s side include the first seeded Radu Albot, Paolo Lorenzi, Andrey Rublev, Dan Evans, and Reilly Opelka.

One early qualifying match to also highlight is Denis Istomin’s hard fought three set win over Darian King. The veteran takes on Lukáš Lacko next.

Notable losers included the sixth seed in Christian Garín and fifth seeded Juan Ignacio Londero. Women’s singles also saw several top seeded qualifiers advancing with others splashing out early. Among the losers is sixth seeded rising star Katie Boulter, top seed Anastasia Potapova, second seed and Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard, and eighth seeded American Jennifer Brady. Most of these losses come unexpectedly and should shakeup the field moving forward.

As the favorites in the main draw await the remainder of qualifying, we keep an eye on some winners in qualifying such as Kaia Kanepi who takes on Timea Babos next, fourth seeded Viktorija Golubic, and Kristýna Plíšková.
