Stephens took the 2016 title in women’s singles here, defeating Elena Vesnina in a tough straight set final. The American tennis star is the top seed and should be among the favorites at the Charleston Open. Stephens is due for a strong tournament run. After splashing out in the first or second rounds as of late, she could breakout at the 2019 Charleston Open.

Another player to keep an eye on is the 10th seeded Jeļena Ostapenko. The Latvian tennis star wins her opener over a tough opponent in Johanna Larsson. The 10th seed wins in straight sets, knocking out Larsson with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. She will go up against Rogers next.

Here are some other key matchups to lookout for this week. Danielle Collins is the 11th seed at the Charleston Open. She takes on fellow American Madison Brengle on Tuesday. Kiki Bertens, the defending champion at the event, is the second seed. She squares off against Martina Trevisan first. Bertens has fared well in recent events and could prove to challenge the likes of Stephens, Ostapenko, Bencic, and Julia Goerges.
