Stan Wawrinka vs Lucas Pouille: Monte Carlo Predictions
By Harry Floyd
Swiss tennis star Stan Wawrinka finds himself in a tough matchup while opening his time at the 2019 Monte Carlo Masters.
Up first for world number 36 Stan Wawrinka at the Monte Carlo Masters is Lucas Pouille. This is a tough one to call. The two players do not have a history of playing one another in ATP men’s singles matches. Wawrinka is continuing his comeback following his knee injury two years ago. 2018 saw him return to action and, this year, he even reached a final in Rotterdam.
Pouille is the current world number 31 on the ATP Tour. He is looking for a breakout tournament to really get his season going and Monte Carlo could be it.
The winner of the Wawrinka-Pouille matchup will take on either Marco Cecchinato or Damir Dzumhur. Will it be Wawrinka? We give him the edge in this one. He has fared relatively well so far on the 2019 ATP Tour.
Rotterdam was of course his best performance on the year. There, he fell to French tennis star Gael Monfils in the finals. Watch the highlights from that fantastic final here.
All eyes at the Monte Carlo Masters are on defending champion Rafael Nadal. Wawrinka and Pouille are on his half of the draw. If Rafa goes on a serious run, either player is going to need to get past him to reach the finals. Take a look at the full men’s singles draw HERE.
Wawrinka and Pouille face off tomorrow at the 2019 Monte Carlo Masters. Who do you like in the matchup? We’re going with Stan the Man but this is not a given. He is 11-7 in his singles matches on the year and Pouille is 5-5.
Check back to see how Stan Wawrinka fares during his Monte Carlo opener against Lucas Pouille. We will also be tracking Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and others like Alexander Zverev as clay court season is in full swing.
