Two-time defending champion Alexander Zverev is off to the exact start he was looking for in Munich this week. He wins his opener in dominant fashion.

Alexander Zverev wins his opener at the 2019 Bavarian International Tennis Championships, otherwise known as the BMW Open. The top seed is a two-time defending champion in the men’s singles field at Munich. He is also in need of a strong tournament performance on the ATP Tour right now and this is the place for him to get back on his feet.

Winning his opener in straight sets, Zverev ousts Juan Ignacio Londero of Argentina. Zverev takes the round of 16 meeting with ease, going 7-5, 6-1. Despite a somewhat back and forth first set, Zverev was unstoppable in the second.

So how far can Zverev go in Munich? Odds are… pretty far. He is into the quarterfinals next, taking on Cristian Garín of Chile. Garín is coming off of a win over the sixth seeded Diego Schwartzman. His match against the top seed in Zverev presents a huge challenge.

Zverev is arguably the next great superstar in men’s singles tennis. He is the current world number three in men’s singles on the ATP Tour. Even though he has posted just a 12-7 ATP singles match record on the year so far, he is plenty capable of breaking out at any given moment.

If there’s a place for the young German to rediscover his 2019, it is in Munich. Both of his previous two titles here came in straight sets. He enjoys the backing of the crowds in Munich and says that he loves playing there. Zverev must be considered the player to beat on the men’s singles side of the action at the 2019 Bavarian International Tennis Championships.

Other players still to play their round of 16 matches include the second seed in Karen Khachanov and the fourth seeded Roberto Bautista Agut. There are plenty of ATP stars in the mix this week in Munich. Alexander Zverev is, however, the top contender and the rest of the field needs to keep an eye on him moving forward.
