In January 2019, Andy Murray was at breaking point. An emotional press conference before the start of the Australian Open confirmed the worst fears of his fans.
Andy Murray first suffered his hip injury back in 2017. This followed the best season of his career in 2016 when he reached world number one. An incredible feat in what has undoubtably been the most brutal period in tennis history. Murray reaching world number one in the same era as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic is a huge testament to his work ethic and determination.
However, after a brief comeback last year, Murray had to face facts. His tennis career is coming to an end. Will he play singles again? It looks unlikely. No player in history has ever returned to playing singles following the operation Murray has had. Despite this, US doubles player Bob Bryan has returned to playing after undergoing the same operation.
So perhaps there is still hope for Murray to return to the tennis court, as a doubles player. Only time will tell. In the meantime, it’s a good opportunity to look back at some of Murray’s finest moments. Here is a look back at the top ten of his greatest matches.
