The 2019 French Open is underway and action in both men’s and women’s singles. Let’s take a look at some early winners and surprises.

We already have some top players winning their opening round matches at the 2019 French Open. Among them is Swiss tennis legend and former Roland Garros champion Roger Federer. He is normally one to skip the entire clay court season in recent years but Federer is back and off to a fantastic start. He wins his opener, defeating Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets.

Federer wins his round of 128 match with ease, going 6-2 6-4 6-4. Another big winner is Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori. He enters the field this year as the seventh seed in men’s singles and takes his opener over Quentin Halys 6-2 6-3 6-4.

Belgian tennis star David Goffin is in need of a deep tournament run and he gets the start that he was looking for. Coming in as the 27th seed in men’s singles, Coffin is something of an outside pick to go far at the French Open.

Goffin is plenty capable of it and has the experience necessary to make a deep run. He wins his opener in dominating fashion, defeating Ričardas Berankis. Goffin goes 6-0 6-2 6-2.

On the women’s side of the field, Kiki Bertens is off to a good start, winning her opening in straight sets. Bertens is carrying some serious momentum into Roland Garros this year. The fourth seed in women’s singles ousts Pauline Parmentier in straight sets, winning 6-3 6-4.

Also winning on the women’s side of the action is Garbine Muguruza, Ashleigh Barty, Johanna Konta, Elina Svitolina, Petra Kvitova, and Belinda Bencic among others. A somewhat surprise upset came to German tennis star Angelique Kerber. She does not have a strong history on clay or at the French Open though. Kerber drops her opener against 18-year-old Anastasia Potapova.
