Gael Monfils is off to a near perfect start at the 2019 French Open. The French tennis veteran is one of the best players in men’s singles today without a Grand Slam singles title to his name. Previously, he has gone as far as the semifinals at Roland Garros.
Can Monfils make a title run at Roland Garros this year? So far, so good for the 32-year-old tennis star. He wins his first two matches in Paris in straight sets.

Most recently, Monfils knocks out fellow countryman Adrian Mannarino. He wins their round of 64 match in straight sets, going 6-3 6-4 6-4. This comes following a win over Taro Daniel during his opener at Roland Garros.
Monfils is continuing an already stellar 2019. Earlier this year, he took the title at Rotterdam. He’s now won an ATP singles title in back-to-back years on tour. Monfils enters this year’s French Open as the world number 17 in men’s singles and he is the 14th seed at the major tournament.
Up next for him is another fellow countryman in Antonie Hoang. He is coming off of HUGE wins over the likes of both Fernando Verdasco and Damir Džumhur. Hoang will need, however, another beyond impressive performance if he hopes to stop Monfils in his tracks.
We like Monfils in their upcoming round of 32 meeting. How far can Monfils ultimately go at Roland Garros this year? That remains to be seen. He should get past Hoang though and then… anything is possible. The French tennis veteran is a towering and athletic force on the courts and he has proven himself throughout his career against all types of opponents.
Elsewhere at the 2019 French Open, all eyes are on the likes of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal among others. Federer is yet to drop a singles set, as are Djokovic and Nadal. All three tennis stars are into the round of 32. Players like Gael Monfils will need to keep up the momentum if they hope to challenge these greats.
