Up and coming women’s singles tennis star Sofia Kenin shocks the sport’s greatest champion in Serena Williams at Roland Garros.

Women’s tennis star Sofia Kenin has been someone to watch for the better part of a year now. She continues her success at the 2019 French Open, shocking the greatest champion the sport has ever seen. Coming face to face with American tennis icon Serena Williams, Kenin was in for her toughest matchup yet at Roland Garros.

After winning her opener against Giulia Gatto-Monticone, Kenin was originally scheduled to take on another rising star in Bianca Andreescu before the Canadian had to withdraw from Roland Garros due to a shoulder injury.

Then, Kenin found herself going up against Williams in the round of 32. Williams entered the action at the French Open this year as the tenth seed in women’s singles. She took a three-set win in her opener before defeating Kurumi Nara in straight sets.

Williams could not find her rhythm against Kenin. The young American tennis star dominated the first set of the match, winning 6-2. Then, despite a good effort on Williams’ part to get back into it in the second, Kenin was able to hold her off. She would take the second set 7-5.

Understandably emotional in the post-match interview, Kenin looked into the crowd at her father and supporters. Kenin is just 20-years-old and there’s no doubt that her win over Williams is something that she will remember for her entire life.

Lookout for Kenin moving forward at Roland Garros. While all eyes turn toward the like of defending champion Simona Halep or others such as Garbine Muguruza and Sloane Stephens, Kenin represents a new generation of players knocking on the door of the veteran greats.
