Action at the 2019 French Open reaches the quarterfinals and some matches are already in the bag. Let’s dive deeper.
Defending champion Rafael Nadal is also an 11-time champ at the French Open. The King of Clay continues to display brilliance this year at Roland Garros. Going up against a top player in men’s singles during the quarterfinals, Rafa remained unfazed.
Nadal defeats Japanese tennis star Kei Nishikori in straight sets to reach the semifinals yet again. He goes a stellar 6-1 6-1 6-3 over the seventh seeded Nishikori. This year marked the third time since 2015 that Nishikori made a quarterfinals appearance.

It is Rafa moving forward though. And of course… his win, along with another quarterfinals match outcome, sets up one of the most anticipated matches of the year.
In the other quarterfinals match already to go down in men’s singles, two Swiss tennis stars went up against one another. Roger Federer came face to face with friend and fellow French Open champion Stan Wawrinka in the quarters. Both players have one title at Roland Garros to their names a piece.
This time around, Federer maintains his successful record against Wawrinka, defeating him in four sets. Two of the sets won by Federer went to tiebreak. He advances into the semifinals to take on Nadal, defeating Wawrinka 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
As we await the outcomes of the final two men’s singles quarterfinals matches, let’s take a look at the women’s. Johanna Konta went up against Sloane Stephens for an epic quarters meeting. Konta, the 26th seed, is an extremely accomplished player but played the role of underdog against the seventh seeded Stephens.
It is Konta who advances, winning 6-1 6-4. She will take on a 19-year-old having a dream run at Roland Garros right now in Markéta Vondroušová. She defeats the 31st seeded Petra Martić in straight sets to go even further at the 2019 French Open.
