Barbora Krejcikova has been ranked as high as number two on the WTA tour (February 28, 2022), but 2022 was a bit of a struggle after she injured her arm early in the year. But she is beginning to finish 2023 on a high note. On Saturday, Krejcikova won two Cymbiotika San Diego Open titles.

Her first title came in singles when she defeated Sofia Kenin – Kenin was in her first WTA tour final since 2020 – in three sets. The match was well-played by both players but Krejcikova finally prevailed in two hours and 38 minutes. In the end, the difference was Krejcikova’s serve.

Krejcikova finished with 11 aces while Kenin had just 3. Kenin also double-faulted 8 times. Not exactly the ratio a player wants. She was also able to win just 19 of 56 points on Krejcikova’s first serve and 15 of 32 against Krejcikova’s second serve. Meanwhile, Krejcikova won 20 of 33 points on Kenin’s second serve.

Barbora Krejcikova gets two victories at the San Diego Open

Krejcikova just had a bit too much power for Kenin. The Czech is capable of hitting away with any player on tour. One does not get to number two in the world by accident. But as Krejcikova has struggled with injuries and inconsistency over the last year and a half, a win in San Diego might just propel her toward a fantastic 2024.

Krejcikova entered the San Diego Open on a four-game losing streak. She had a fairly easy run to the title as she only defeated one seeded player. Still, confidence goes a long way, and getting the last win in a tournament can help any player.

But Krejcikova didn’t just stop with her singles win. Later on Saturday, she won the San Diego Open in doubles alongside Katerina Siniakova. Krejcikova and Siniakova had a fairly easy win over Danielle Collins and CoCo Vandeweghe as they won 6-1 6-4. One might have wondered if Krejcikova would have been extremely tired in the doubles match after such a grueling singles final, but maybe the singles victory helped her get through.
