Amateur tennis player Jordan Smith accomplished the unthinkable when he won the 1 Point Slam at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. Against all odds, the Australian State champion surpassed all other competitors, including 24 legitimate professionals, to take home a whopping one million dollars (AUD).
The tournament featured some of the biggest names in tennis, and no one expected an amateur player to be the one to lift the trophy.
The 48-player tournament featured a very unique format, where a single point won against an opponent means progressing to the next round. Professionals participating in the event included Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek, Alexander Zverev, Coco Gauff, Alexander Bublik, Nick Kyrgios, and others.
Jordan Smith stuns the tennis world by winning the Australian Open 1 Point Slam
The remaining 24 players included eight state champions from Australia, eight Melbourne qualifiers, and eight wildcards. To everyone's surprise, Jordan Smith, one of those eight state champions, made his way to the final, even beating Sinner, who lost on account of a double fault.
Smith found himself in the final up against Joanna Garland, a pro on the WTA circuit. Garland, before being dispatched by Smith, was on her own kind dream run, producing two major upsets against Zverev and Kyrgios. Garland is currently ranked 117th in the WTA.
After winning rock-paper-scissors for the serve, Garland served to decide the 1 Point Slam. Smith returned well, and Garland's subsequent backhand soured wide, ensuring Smith the victory and life-changing prize money.
In his post-point interview, Smith expressed nervousness and excitement leading into the tournament, saying, "Coming into tonight, (I was) just happy just winning one point."

The 1 Point Slam debuted before last year's Australian Open, but did not feature as many pros or fan fair. After the success of the US Open's preliminary mixed doubles event, the Australian Open decided to have its own fun at Rod Laver Arena, according to ESPN.
The Australian Open main draw kicks off on January 18 (or, for most of the world, on Saturday, January 17). The winners on both the men's and women's sides will earn a cool $4 million in Australian dollars. That is the kind of money that Jordan Smith can certainly appreciate.
