Arthur Fils has arrived. 22 years old and trying to play catch-up to players like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, Fils is inching closer to that level. He simply needs to refine his best skills and will be a long-term resident of the top 10.
As he showed in his first career Masters 1000 victory by defeating Frances Tiafoe in the final of the Cincinnati Open, Fils has developed the mental stamina to lose a set but not let that rattle him. Moreover, he has the immense serve and bombastic forehand to keep opponents on the defensive.
The match was not as easy as it could have been. Fils jumped out to an early first-set lead and just needed to keep holding serve to sweep into the second set, hoping that might be the last one he plays in Cincinnati. He won the set in commanding fashion, 6-3.

That is when things suddenly turned. In a matchup of the two players of color to reach the final of a Masters 1000, Tiafoe showed real teeth and won set two easily, 6-1. Maybe the veteran player understood how to calm his nerves better, as he had reached the deep levels of important tournaments before, while Fils hadn't made the final of a Masters or Grand Slam.
The momentum for Tiafoe wouldn't last, though, and rightfully so. Arthur Fils had played much better overall, and he deserved the victory. He turned the third set into a one-sided affair after Tiafoe needed a medical timeout at the end of set two, and Fils wouldn't lose a game the rest of the way.
He finished with 11 aces to Tiafoe's four, and Fils had 23 winners and 29 unforced errors, while Tiafoe had only nine and 25, respectively. This wasn't a match that Fils should have lost, and he didn't.
Now, he has reached No. 11 in the ATP live rankings and has had his best season on tour. He has reached the semifinals of two Masters events in 2026 and now has won his first. He is playing exceedingly well entering the US Open that begins on August 30.
Nothing Fils is doing is accidental, however. He has elite skill, and he finally appears to be putting it all together. He will be a real threat for Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner if he stays healthy, especially on hard courts. Fils' best is likely ahead of him, and tennis fans should get used to his name.
