The prize money for the Australian Open, just like every other Grand Slam in tennis, seems to go up every year. This is great for the players, of course. It also means the tournament is making a lot of money from sponsorships. It is a win-win.

Heck, even if you are trying to pay your mortgage, you might be almost able to get close to a pay-off with a first-round victory. If you are lucky enough to win the entire tournament, you could buy several houses. Maybe even get one for family members and friends. That would be a nice thing to do.

The overall prize pool in Melbourne is $59.9 million ($96.5 million in Australian dollars), which is not bad. It is also the lowest amount of the four majors. The US Open is the highest with a total prize pool of $75 million. Still, winning both Grand Slams would make you financially wealthy.

How much money does a player earn (and how many ranking points) by winning the 2025 Australian Open?

Besides the prize money, a player can move up the respective ATP and WTA rankings as well. Or drop in the rankings quite a bit. Should a player win the event, they will earn 2,000 points. To put that in perspective, if WTA No. 6 Elena Rybakina were to lose 2,000 points, she would drop from No. 6 to No. 14. Top-seed Aryna Sabalenka has the most points to defend as she won the title in Melbourne last year.

Speaking of Rybakina, she could race up the rankings with a good showing. She only made the second round in 2024, so if she won the title she could move up to No. 3. Still, her situation is pretty much a mess after firing coach Stefano Vukov, hiring Goran Ivanisevic, re-hiring Vukov, but only coached at the Australian Open by Ivanisevic as Vukov is serving a suspension and cannot be in Melbourne.

At least if Ivanisevic can lead Rybakina to the title, it would not be the coach's first one. He helped Novak Djokovic win four of his ten titles at the Australian Open.

The good part is that the women and men win the same amount of money at the Aussie Open, though the points vary slightly. The points look this way:

The money (and this matters as every professional player plays tennis in order to get paid) looks like the following.

In other words, just practice your tennis game, and get ready to win a lot of money. Or not win a point against a top 250 player. Either way is just as possible.
