The BNP Paribas Open in 2024 turned out to be a monumental event. Though, in a very negative way. That is when current ATP No. 1 Jannik Sinner failed two drug tests. He will miss Indian Wells (the other name for the BNP Paribas Open) due to a suspension from those drug tests.
This means the Masters 1000 event could be extremely important for Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev. More so for Zverev, as Alcaraz won the event last year and is simply defending the points he won in 2024. Zverev lost to Alcaraz in the quarter-finals last year, so if he wins the title, he will pick up a large number of points to try to catch Sinner.
Iga Swiatek won on the WTA side in 2024. As Indian Wells is held on a hard court, this was an impressive feat for a player who is better on clay. WTA No. 3 Coco Gauff lost in the semi-finals, but she has no real chance to unseat Aryna Sabalenka as WTA No. 1 even if Gauff wins the tournament. Sabalenka only reached the round of 16, so with a good run this year, she could put even more distance between her and the rest of the field.
