The first round of the 2025 French Open got underway on Sunday, and we didn't see any massive upsets. Monday changed that. Emma Navarro, the ninth seed, lost, as did men's fourth seed Taylor Fritz. And those were all early matches.
This means the French Open is shaping up to have several surprises, and maybe not a great one for American tennis. Perhaps Navarro and Fritz will be the last of the shocking losses.
Both of last year's singles champions played on Monday, and their results were about what one would expect. Here is some of what took place.
Paula Badosa wins and Taylor Fritz loses in first-round play at the French Open
Paula Badosa defeats Naomi Osaka in three sets
Osaka is back to consistently playing and is doing relatively well, if nowhere near her previous form when she was WTA No. 1. Badosa was seemingly on the verge of retirement last year due to a back problem, but she is also in good form.
Osaka lost early in the French Open for the second straight year, but has had tough draws. In 2024, she played Iga Swiatek to three sets, which held true against Badosa. In the end, Badosa was more consistent in beating Osaka 6-7(1) 6-1 6-4, and she could make a deep run in the Grand Slam.
Emma Navarro wins only one game against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro
What the heck happened? Navarro isn't the best clay-court player on the WTA tour, but there is shame in losing 6-0 6-1 to unseeded Bouzas Maneiro. A first-round loss isn't terrible, but losing as she did could significantly affect her confidence for the rest of the summer.
Navarro's one win tied the mark for the worst result for a top-10 woman in any Grand Slam event ever.
Iga Swiatek moves on
Swiatek has won four French Open titles, and three in a row. Even though she has been far from her best in 2025, she cannot be counted out of winning in Paris. Her first round victory over Rebecca Sramkova 6-3 6-3 was straightforward and easy. Swiatek might not be the odds-on favorite to win the French this year, but she will be a tough out.
Carlos Alcaraz has it easy
Alcaraz had the same kind of match Swiatek did in beating Giulio Zeppieri 6-3 6-4 6-2. The match's outcome was never in doubt, and the Spaniard appeared to be working on a few things in the third set. The 2024 French Open winner is likely on a path to the final in 2025, too.
Taylor Fritz gets bounced out by Daniel Altmaier
American men on clay do not generally go well, but Fritz has been playing better on the surface over the last year. Altmaier is a capable player who will be tough to defeat, but never reach greatness. Don't ask Fritz about that, though. He likely has the ultimate respect for the German after Altmaier took the match 7-5 3-6 6-3 6-1.
