Jack Draper simply needs a break, but the question is how long his body forces him to be away from tennis. The 24-year-old Brit has called it a season, about a month before his 2026 season would have ended anyway. Will he be able to come back healthier in 2027? Maybe not.
His longest-term injury is to his left arm (Draper's dominant hand), and it is an unusual bone. He has chronic bruising from internal bleeding in his humerus. The ailment forced him to miss every Grand Slam event this year, and his former top-10 ranking has fallen all the way to No. 143.
Besides his arm, Draper also had a knee problem in 2026, and that is why he missed the French Open. The Brit clearly wants to play, though, even attempting to enter Challenger events before needing to withdraw because of his arm.

The shame is that the Brit would be great for tennis if he could stay healthy and successful for a long stretch of time. Having a player for the UK who can challenge for ATP 1000s and majors, especially Wimbledon, helps the sport. Tennis saw an uptick when Andy Murray was at his best in the 2010s, for instance.
Murray is currently a part-time coach for Draper, interestingly enough, and while the Scot can advise Draper on how best to handle injuries emotionally, as Murray simply had more than his share of ailments during his career, the British icon can only help so much in terms of Draper's actual injuries, especially the arm.
In the summer of 2025, Draper was beginning to emerge as a force on the tour. That was when the arm problem became too severe to try to keep playing.
In a social media post, Draper said the plan was to return at the start of 2027, but as the ATP season ends with the ATP Finals in November, and the Brit didn't have the points to play in that event, his season was almost done anyway. Whether rest will actually help Jack Draper heal well enough that he can return to tennis consistently beginning next year remains to be seen.
At this point, that is only a hope, both for the player and his legion of fans. He wants to play, and the sport could use his presence, but Draper's body might not make that possible.
