Jack Draper won't get his dream ending at the Eastbourne Open

Ugo Humbert has always been an idiosyncratic player. He is capable of greatness (he even has a solid record of 14-18 when playing players ranked in the top 10 on the ATP at the time of the match), but he has an issue sustaining that. If he is in form, for instance, Jack Draper would have been facing a difficult matchup in the semifinals of the 2026 Eastbourne Open.

Draper has had a good week, too, though. His serve has been on point, and he's been able to dictate narratives of matches because of that. This would also be the case for much of the first set against Humbert. Each player was able to hold serve without facing a break point until Draper tried to hold serve at 6-5.

Humbert did get the break point, but then hit a forehand unnecessarily long to get back to deuce. He was then able to get the advantage back after a ridiculously good drop shot on a return of serve from the Brit. Draper fought off that break point, too, however. The Frenchman would get the break after two more tries, though, to take the first set 7-5.

In the second set, Humbert kept holding early, though his games were exceedingly long. While this might have been physically taxing, it also might have become a mental barrier for Draper: He would come close to taking an advantage in the set, only to have that taken away at the last minute.

Trying to hold at 3-2, however, Draper failed. Humbert got a break relatively easily, and he was clearly reaching top form late in the match; Draper couldn't match his form. The Frenchman was beginning to dictate points more, even though his service games weren't overly easy.

Even trying to hold at 2-5 became a challenge, though he was able to do so. The match had tilted heavily in favor of Humbert, so much so that his final service game was much easier. Still, Draper should have built some confidence for Wimbledon, which begins on Monday, June 29.

Ugo Humbert will next face Zizou Bergs in the final of the 2026 Eastbourne Open. Bergs is a surprise finalist, as he had a losing record on the year entering the tournament. If Humbert can tweak his service games a bit, he will dominate Bergs in the final.
