Naomi Osaka versus Karolina Muchova may have been a quarterfinal match few had predicted ahead of Wimbledon 2026, but they had earned their way there. Osaka hadn't dropped a set all tournament; she was the only player, woman or man, left in the tournament not to have lost a set.
Muchova, though, was a great example of a player from the Czech Republic. She and her fellow countrypeople simply know how to play on grass courts exceedingly well. In 2023 and 2024, for instance, Wimbledon was won by women from the nation.
In other words, while slightly unexpected, Osaka versus Muchova had become must-watch tennis for fans of the sport. One could expect a close match with well-constructed points and immense forehands. In the first set, the players did not disappoint.

Both players were striking the ball well when returning. Muchova was broken in the first game, Osaka in the next, and they traded breaks over the next two games, too. The set was 2-all, and neither player had held serve. Oddly, the next eight games saw each hold somewhat easily, and quickly into the match it was 6-all.
In the tie-break, Muchova raised her level, quickly getting out to a 5-1 lead. Osaka did fight back, but the Czech eventually took the opening set in a 7-4 tie-break.
The second set witnessed both players holding serve, but often under great duress. It was Osaka who cracked first, and at the worst time. At 4-all, she appeared to tire and struggled greatly to land her first serve. She stayed in the game longer than most, but Muchova eventually got the break.
Serving at 5-4, the Czech player, who is trending toward being the third woman from her country to win Wimbledon in the last four years, held at love. Naomi Osaka appeared to have accepted her fate even before the first serve of the final game. Her dream run at the grass-court major was completely shattered.
She at least has been ticking up in form. The Japanese player has won the US Open twice before, and based on how she did at Wimbledon, she should be a real threat to take the title in New York this year, too.
Karolina Muchova will next play Coco Gauff in the semifinals. Gauff overcame Jessica Pegula in three difficult sets to move into her first semis at Wimbledon.
