Novak Djokovic seems fairly close to retirement. Or, who knows? Maybe he will play another three years. He is certainly not going to be playing as many tournaments, focusing on helping Serbia win and trying to add more Grand Slam titles. After he and long-time coach Goran Ivanisevic split ways earlier in 2024, the end appeared even closer for Djokovic.

But the Serb has always kept tennis fans on our toes. Just when we think one thing about Djokovic, he does something to prove he always had something else in mind. Maybe 2025 will not be his final year on the ATP and he once some distance between his retirement and two other greats, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray, both of whom retired in 2024.

Well, Murray sort of retired. As it turns out, he will still be an impactful figure in tennis next year. That is because there was an announcement on Saturday that Djokovic had hired Murray to be his coach through at least the Australian Open. This could mean that Murray works with Djokovic for only a few months. We can hope for better than that, though.

Novak Djokovic hires Andy Murray to be his new coach (for now)

Let's hope that Djokovic, who did not win a major this year, finds a way to get another Australian Open title in January, but he is helped by Murray's coaching. The two might simply want to see how long they can continue their success. Djokovic is not likely to reach No. 1 again because he won't be playing enough tournaments, but maybe he can win a couple of more majors.

How fun will it be to see Murray in Djokovic's box, giving him tips on what he needs to be doing during matches? There is little doubt that the emotion that Murray played with might roll over to Djokovic a bit.

The Serb does not really need pointers on how to improve his game. No one knows him better than he does. But Murray might help motivate Djokovic just when he needs it. The partnership of Djokovic and Murray is going to be grand fun to watch.
