It was inevitable but did not happen exactly how he wanted it to. Jannik Sinner will assume the World No. 1 ranking for the first time in his career on June 10 when the updated rankings come out.

Because Novak Djokovic was forced to withdraw from his French Open quarterfinal match with Casper Ruud, the points calculation associated with Djokovic being unable to defend his French Open title lifted Sinner to the World No. 1 spot.

Sinner is the 2024 Australian Open champion and remains in contention for the French Open, facing Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals on Friday. His last six months of tennis have been outstanding with the only blip being a hip injury that forced him out of his home tournament, the Italian Open. As expected, the tennis community congratulated Sinner and his coach, Darren Cahill, upon hearing the news. Cahill received one special shoutout, a reminder of his past success as a coach.

Simona Halep congratulates her former coach Darren Cahill

One of Cahill's previous charges that ascended to the top of the game, Simona Halep, sent a social media congratulatory note to both Cahill and Sinner. Cahill was the guiding force behind much of Halep's success, and he was a staunch defender of her during her prolonged suspension on doping charges.

Halep and Sinner are just two of the players that Cahill has guided to on court success. He also played a role in fellow Australian Lleyton Hewitt's rise to the top of the game and was one of Andre Agassi's coaches during his legendary career.

Cahill has always had faith in Sinner, just as he did Halep. He is intentional about which players he chooses to work with. He wants players who are good at tennis and good humans. Jannik Sinner is the personification of those qualities, and it is wonderful to see him as the ATP's newest World No. 1.
