Emma Raducanu slammed over avoiding 2024 Paris Olympics
By Lee Vowell
Emma Raducanu certainly has a different approach to the Olympics than fellow Brit Andy Murray or Spaniard Rafael Nadal. Murray and Nadal appear ready to set foot on whatever court the Olympics are taking place to represent their home nation. Raducanu? Not so much.
Before moving forward here, it should be noted that we are not calling out Raducanu for being disloyal to Great Britain. Was she born in Canada? Sure, but if she were to represent a nation at the Olympics it would not be Canada but the UK. Those are simply the facts so Raducanu is a Brit. At Lob and Smash, we don't care where she is from and this is simply an article about how others are perceiving her.
Of course, Raducanu has been involved with other situations lately where she seems to care more about herself than the greater good. For instance, she pulled out of mixed doubles at Wimbledon but continued to play in singles (where she lost her next match after withdrawing from mixed doubles). The issue was she was set to play with Andy Murray in what would have been Murray's final match at the grass-court major.
Emma Raducanu's decision to skip the Olympics is questioned again
Raducanu chose to play for herself and kept millions of tennis fans from getting to see Murray exit a Wimbledon court under his own choice for the last time. Raducanu made the choice for him.
The Brit has made no secret that she is thinking of herself first currently and the rest of the world can be damned. She said ahead of her run at Wimbledon, "I'm in no rush to do anything and everything I am doing and playing for now is for myself. Whether that's tournament scheduling, whether that's how much time I take off to train compared to compete, I think I'm just way more focused on my own lane and less susceptible to outside opinions or views."
Good for her because she is certainly taking a lot of heat for skipping the Olympics where she could have entered to represent the UK on an exemption. The latest blast of the 21-year-old comes from former top-20 WTA player Heather Watson.
According to the Guardian, Watson said of Raducanu, "The Olympics is the greatest sporting event in history. So why wouldn’t you want to be a part of that? Anyone in general who chooses not to participate, I can’t relate."
Many other tennis fans cannot understand her move either. She is healthy enough to play but simply chose not to. Hopefully, in the future, Emma Raducanu will have a different viewpoint.
