Tennis News: Iga Swiatek and Marketa Vondrousova
- Swiatek's strangest conditions
- Hoping Vondrousova is OK
By Lee Vowell
Iga Swiatek has played in a bunch of odd situations, of course, and she has played plenty of matches at a high-level. While not always being ranked No. 1 on the WTA tour for the last two years, she mostly has. While she sometimes suffers surprising losses that maybe other greats such as Serena Williams would not have, Swiatek is still the most successful player in women's tennis currently.
Because Swiatek has played so many matches, she likely has seen some weird things. That could be the way a crowd behaves, the weather conditions, or literally anything else. This past week at Indian Wells in a post-match press conference, Swiatek was asked about the matches that seemed odd.
This came about because of the bee invasion during the match between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev when play had to be suspended for over an hour as the bees were removed. This isn't the first time bees have caused an issue during a match, and won't be the last. That does not make it less memorable, however.
Iga Swiatek talks about strange situations and good feelings toward Marketa Vondrousova
According to Swiatek, "The strangest? I mean, the whole Cancun situation (where the WTA Finals were held at the end of 2023) was pretty strange. I thought honestly the stadium was going to fall apart when I was in the middle of it. I'm happy that it didn't.
"There were some drunk people in Melbourne once when I played my first Australian Open, I think, pro, and in Miami, but that's not strange, I guess. I mean, it's entertainment. But yeah, they were shouting and it was visible that they were drunk. But that was fine. I mean, I'm fine with that."
What tennis fans are likely not fine with is what is going on with Marketa Vondrousova. To be fair, she seems like a decent person who is entertaining to watch and a good player, but there seemed to be a bit of a struggle with her recently. She withdrew suddenly from Indian Wells but the reason did not seem injury-related. Vondrousova also withdrew from the Miami Open citing personal reasons.
Last week, it was reported that Vondrousova likely withdrew from Indian Wells and the Miami Open because of the recent passing of her grandfather. There is no timetable for her return, but that is the least of her concerns. Hopefully, tennis fans and players treat her kindly whenever she does come back.
