Serena Williams is back! She hasn't even ruled out a return to play singles, but for now, she will be doing doubles only. Even that aspect is fantastic, though. She will be playing alongside rising Canadian star Victoria Mboko. As far as when the two will play their first match together, that will happen on Tuesday, June 9. The time is to be determined.
The match will occur at the HSBC Championships in London, an event that runs through June 14. In Serena Williams and Victoria Mboko's first match, they will take on a very good team, Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe, who are the third seeds at the event.
On paper, Williams and Mboko would be a team to be reckoned with, but the truth is that Williams certainly has some rust to shake off, no matter if she was playing singles or doubles. Plus, many times it takes a doubles team to find the best way to work together, and even if two players might be elite playing by themselves, sometimes they are less effective with one another.
Serena Williams is set to play doubles with Victoria Mboko at the HSBC Championships on Tuesday, June 9
That might not be the case with Williams and Mboko, of course. Maybe they sneak through the tournament and make some real noise at the end, but that shouldn't be the expectation. The fun is in having Williams back at all, but in the HSBC Championships, that might not last a long time.
The good thing is that Serena Williams won't be one-and-done even if she and Victoria Mboko lose in the opening match. The American has already scheduled her next event, which is the following week at the Berlin Tennis Open, which begins on June 15.
Most importantly, both of the tournaments are warm-up events for Wimbledon. The question that remains for Berlin is whether Williams will be playing with Mboko. Her official doubles partner has yet to be announced.
If you want to watch Serena Williams return, which will be her first professional tennis match since the 2022 US Open, you easily can. In the United States, fans can watch the HSBC Championships (otherwise known as Queen's Club) on the Tennis Channel. In the UK, tennis lovers can watch on BBC Two and iPlayer.
