Taylor Fritz was a stern taskmaster against 21-year-old Daniel Merida in the third round of the 2026 Cincinnati Open. Merida didn't play poorly, so he has some positives to take away from the match, but ultimately, the American was far too much.
Merida appears capable of making some solid runs in high-end future events. He strikes the ball well and moves exceedingly well. On some magnificent shots by Fritz, Merida was able to chase the ball down and do something with it.
On one point in the first set, Fritz hit what seemed like a winner down the line with Merida on the opposite side of the court, but the Spaniard got to the ball and hit a magnificent overhead to win the point. It was one of the few high points in the match for Merida, however.

Otherwise, the lessons he could take from Fritz's dominant win were that one needs to serve like a metronome with precise power to keep a defender at bay. Any slight hope that Merida might have was quickly snuffed out by a brilliant Fritz serve. Then, the American would repeat the act and get a win.
What Fritz does well is stack points and has a solid game plan heading into each match. He might be overmatched at times by players with elite skill, such as Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, but he is never unprepared.
Merida didn't quite have the same prep. He played points well, but changed tactics too many times to understand he needed to settle on one for a length of time in hopes he might build some momentum. Maybe Fritz would have never let him, and that might have been implied during the American's 6-3 first-set victory, but Merida needs to adapt and adjust as needed.
He will improve in time. He is too young and too skilled not to. Fritz was simply the better and more experienced player in the third round. Maybe a year from now, Merida will make the match a more competitive one.
After taking the second set 6-4, Taylor Fritz, who didn't drop serve in the match, will next play Christopher O'Connell in the fourth round. O'Connell was a walkover winner against Joao Fonseca, who had to withdraw from the Cincinnati Masters with an abdominal injury ahead of their third-round match.
