Taylor Fritz has been inching toward winning a major for a few years now, but 2026 hasn't started as his best. He has struggled with on-court form and off-court relationship problems. The American was hoping that Wimbledon might cure all his ills.
He has the game to be great on grass courts. His serve is metronomically excellent, but he can't afford dips in form with it because the rest of his game isn't quite good enough against high-end players unless his serve is working. The same could be said of his fourth-round opponent at Wimbledon, Alexander Bublik, too.
The expectation before the match was that it might be a quick one, in that both players would get a lot of free points off the serves and then try to capitalize on a break opportunity if they got one. They would be rare, but they likely would occur. The match might have come down to which made the most out of their opportunities.
Taylor Fritz defeats Alexander Bublik in the fourth round of Wimbledon 2026
In the first two sets, that was Fritz. The opening set went to a tie-break, but the American dominated once there, 7-1. In the second set, he got a break off Bublik while leading 5-4, but even a two-sets-to-love lead didn't necessarily seem safe on grass courts against a fantastic server.
In the third set, though, Fritz was able to get a break at 1-all, and he simply needed to hold to move into the quarterfinals. Tellingly, he had saved two of his three break points by that point, all in the first set, but Bublik was just one of four. That was the difference in a match in which each player had double-digit aces.
Fritz was also a tick better there, however. While Bublik had five double faults, Fritz had just one, as well as 23 aces. His precision while holding was magnificent, worthy of a player capable of taking the Wimbledon crown.
The American made the semifinals of Wimbledon last year, and he's won titles on grass before. He should be scary for the rest of the field after taking the third set from Alexander Bublik 6-4.
Taylor Fritz will next face the winner of the Jiri Lehecka and Alexander Zverev match in the Wimbledon 2026 quarterfinals. Zverev is constantly ranked higher than Fritz in the ATP rankings, but the German has lost the last seven meetings between the two. Fritz's run for Fritz began at Wimbledon 2024.
