When Taylor Fritz has all his immense tools working for him, he is a tough out for even the best of players. Except for their most recent meeting at Wimbledon, for instance, ATP No. 2 Alexander Zverev has been on the bad end of a match with the American.
The only hope that Kamil Majchrzak had in the second round of the Citi Open was that Fritz suffered a dip in form that lasted the entire match. He wasn't so lucky.
Instead, Fritz's best weapon, his serve, was working no matter if he landed the first or missed it. A tennis fan watching might have safely assumed that even if he only hit second serves, he could have wiped Majchrzak away easily. That could be because the American's second serve is better than a lot of players' first.

Fritz also played an exceptionally clean first set against the Polish player, not giving Majchrzak any room to breathe. The American was hitting on average eight miles per hour faster than Majchrzak on the forehand, and five miles per hour faster on his backhand. Group that with Fritz's precise serve, and Majchrzak had no real chance to win the match.
After taking the opening set 6-3, Fritz got a break against the Pole in the fifth game of set two and moved ahead 3-2. As long as he kept serving in his usual form, he was going to have a fairly easy victory. Even while Majchrzak got a couple of points off Fritz in the game after the break, there was no feeling that he was going to be able to mount a comeback.
To his credit, Kamil Majchrzak kept grinding through the rest of his service games, at least forcing Fritz to hold, but that was already a foregone conclusion. Ultimately, the American took the second set 6-4, finishing the match with 14 aces and just three double faults. He won 90 percent of the first serves he landed, and 71 percent of his second serves.
Taylor Fritz will next play the winner of the match between Adrian Mannarino and Alex Michelsen in the quarterfinals. Should the American make it past that match, he could next face top-seeded Alex de Minaur in the semifinals.
