Taylor Fritz's best surface, statistically, is grass. Even though he has played far fewer events than on hard courts, half of his 10 career titles have come on grass courts. This is why he should be a real threat at the Halle Open, and again at Wimbledon, to take the crown.
The issue in 2026, though, might be that Fritz is not having a great year so far, barely over .500, and with a falling ranking. His off-court relationship issues (he broke up with long-time girlfriend Morgan Riddle earlier in the spring after dating for six years) are perhaps taking some of his attention away from tennis. It happens.
In the second round against Zizou Bergs in Halle, Fritz struggled with his immense first serve for much of the first two sets, but he was able to get one more break of the powerful serve of Bergs to take the opening set. In the second set, it was Bergs who got the late break, and the two headed to what was expected to be a third and final set.

Once there, Frtiz continued to not land his first serve but just a bit over half the time, but it was Bergs who was suddenly struggling to land any of his serves at the most important times. After not having any double faults through the first two sets, the Belgian had six in his first three service games of set three.
The last one was the most costly, as Fritz was able to get the break to take a 3-2 lead. Even with his first serve not being up to his usual standards, it seemed likely that the American would keep holding to serve out the match.
He was helped by Zizou Bergs dipping in form in the third set, but the better player was finding his way to grind through a difficult match. That will be needed to win a major in the future. The American took the final set 6-3.
Fritz might finally be finding himself just ahead of Wimbledon. While he hasn't had the best of years, that outlook would completely change should he stun fans by winning Carlos Alcaraz-less Wimbledon, earning his first Grand Slam title. We aren't quite there yet, though.
Taylor Fritz will next play another huge-serving player, Fabian Marozsan, in the round of 16. Should the American get through that match, he could be facing Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals. Shelton recently defeated Fritz in the final of the Boss Open.
