The tennis world was shocked last week when Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray decided to work together through the 2025 Australian Open. Djokovic might be entering his final season on the ATP tour. Murray retired from playing professionally in 2024.

The partnership is no gimmick, though. Djokovic is open to be coached and willing to listen to advice. Murray knows how to win at a high level.

But what will happen when the two team up? Will they argue a bunch as both are strongly opinionated? Likely not. But here are three things that might happen.

Bold predictions for Andy Murray coaching Novak Djokovic

Andy Murray is forced to leave Djokovic's player's box in the third round at the Australian Open

Murray had issues controlling his emotions during his career and that is one reason tennis fans loved him. His outbursts made us all feel like he is one of us, though the vast majority of us likely would have never been able to win a point off Murray in a match (unless he double-faulted). The Brit will almost certainly be more calm during Djokovic's matches, but only to a degree.

The hope is that Murray is as much into Djokovic's matches as he was his own and chirps so much between points at the Aussie Open that Murray is asked to leave the player's box. He will go off in a huff, but that will only inspire the Serb to come back from a match he surprisingly finds himself down in.

Novak Djokovic makes the final of the Australian Open but loses to Jannik Sinner

Let's be real here. Murray is not going to try to coach Djokovic in the finer points of his game. The Serb needs little help, but only maybe some input on minor corrections. Murray is there to help inspire Djokovic to get him to want to keep playing in events he has probably won several times before.

Still, every player has self-doubt from time to time and Murray is going to help push Djokovic through that. The Serb will battle through Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals to give himself a chance at an 11th Australian Open title. He will lose to Sinner in four sets, however.

Murray continues to coach Djokovic through the French Open

Djokovic needs a coach beyond Murray's initial commitment. Murray wants to stay in the sport he loves. There is no reason the two greats cannot keep working together. The question is for how long?

The guess is that they will work together through the spring and through the French Open. There is no guarantee that Djokovic will play many tournaments from the Australian Open until the French so Murray might just be helping with preparation. That might be enough for Djokovic to get a 25th Grand Slam title at the Paris event, though.
