The Mutua Madrid Open WTA singles action is underway. On April 24, the doubles play begins, and there are three intriguing teams that tennis fans will want to keep an eye on.
Four of the players are Grand Slam champions, and four are Americans. The teams also consist of a mixture of new and veteran players.
Could one of these teams lift the trophy at the end of the tournament? We will have to wait and see.
WTA doubles teams at the Madrid Open you are going to want to watch
1. Coco Gauff and Robin Montgomery
Coco Gauff is a Grand Slam singles and doubles champion. Her doubles title came on clay at the 2024 French Open when she teamed up with Katerina Siniakova. She is no stranger to going deep into tournaments in both singles and doubles.
At 21, she already has nine doubles titles on her resume. Teaming with fellow young American Robin Montgomery makes their matches must-see television. Their first round match is an all-American event against the 2024 WTA Finals runner-up team of Caroline Dolehide and Desirae Krawczyk.
2. Madison Keys and Maria Sakkari
Madison Keys and Maria Sakkari are WTA tour veterans, but neither has won a WTA Tour doubles title. Keys started the season blazingly, winning Adelaide and the Australian Open, but she has cooled down in recent tournaments. Sakkari is coming back from an injury and is trying to regain her Top 10 singles form.
3. Victoria Azarenka and Ashlyn Krueger
American Ashlyn Krueger has a doubles title win with Sloane Stephens at last year's Charleston Open. She joins forces with Victoria Azarenka, who is coming back from an injury. Azarenka is a very accomplished doubles player with 10 doubles titles.
She is a four-time Grand Slam women's doubles finalist. Azarenka and Kreuger have a challenging opening round match against Indian Wells doubles champions Asia Muhammad and Demi Schuurs.
