The 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters is over, and the tournament might have mostly turned out how most thought it would. Carlos Alcaraz took the title. He wasn't perfect, but he was obviously the most skilled player in the tournament.

What was odd was that it seemed as if Alcaraz needed to lose a set in most matches to become great. This happened in three of his five matches, including the final against Lorenzo Musetti. In two of those matches, he came back to take the last two sets by dropping a total of one game.

The next important tournament for Alcaraz and the rest of the ATP tour is the Madrid Masters. After that, Jannik Sinner returns. The rest of the year should make for great viewing for tennis fans.

Winners and losers from the 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters

Winner: Lorenzo Musetti

The Italians certainly have a fantastic group of young players. No. 1 Jannik Sinner is just 23 years old, and so is Musetti. He might have been blasted in the final two sets of the Monte-Carlo Masters final, but getting there was a victory. He gained 550 points, and when the new rankings come out, he will move up to a career high No. 11.

Is he ready to make a major impact on the ATP tour? Maybe not. He does not have the skill of Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz, but he could battle for titles if he gets good draws.

Loser: Alexander Zverev

Zverev might never reach No. 1 (or if he does, he won't keep the ranking long) because he appears incapable of taking advantage of the numerous chances he has to reach that level. There is no reason the German should have failed in the three clay court events he has played since Sinner was suspended in February.

He will now fall to No. 3, and he is probably destined to stay there for a while. His form does not imply he will win any of the next few clay court tournaments, and even if he makes a run at the Madrid Masters, he probably won't gain much ground on Alcaraz.

Winner: Carlos Alcaraz

Yes, he won the tournament, so that is a win in itself. But all his wins at the event were his firsts in the tournament. He did not have any points to defend, which means the 1,000 that he received will move him up to No. 2 on the ATP tour.

This is fitting. Zverev is a fine player, but Sinner and Alcaraz are the best players on the ATP tour now and likely well into the future. They likely will battle for No. 1 for at least the rest of the decade. He trails Sinner by 2,210 points, but will have another chance to make up ground at the Madrid Masters later in April. He only reached the quarterfinals there in 2024.

Loser: Stefanos Tsitsipas

Except for the Dubai Open, 2025 has been an atrocious year for the Greek. He won Monte-Carlo in 2024 and should have been one of the favorites this year. His best surface is clay. His loss to Musetti in the quarterfinals cost him dearly.

Not only did he drop in ranking, but he plummeted. He worked his way back into the top 10 after winning Dubai, but his relatively early loss in Monte-Carlo moves him down to 16. Unless he can make some noise at the French Open, Tsitsipas might struggle to get back inside the top 10 for some time.
