The future of Andy Murray’s clothing sponsor has been the focus of much speculation in recent weeks after his 5 year deal with Adidas was not renewed. It looks as if Murray has inadvertently given as a strong clue to the company he has signed a deal with, after being pictured with a fan whilst training out in Miami with an Under Armour vest on under his t-shirt.
Reports are coming in that Under Armour are indeed the clothing company that have signed a deal with Murray for everything apart from his trainers. as the Brit was keen to remain using Adidas footwear. Personally I am not 100% sure that this photo is evidence of a deal with Under Armour as we have seen in the past Murray’s preference for wearing a tight under-shirt and he could have not worried about which brand to buy when training.
What looks to be certain is that Murray will not renew a contract with sporting giants Adidas, who signed a 5 year deal with the tennis star in 2009, which was worth a staggering £15 million. Whilst in the photo in question he is wearing Adidas shorts, reports suggest that he is looking to move towards a brand who will focus more on pushing his image.
Under Armour are an American company who have recently ventured into the English Premier League, manufacturing shorts for Tottenham Hotpsur. They clearly view the British market as a big opportunity and in Murray that will have signed one of the top British sportsmen onto their brand.
Big Four Kit Deals
Whilst Murray has seen a rise in his marketability in recent years with his Grand Slam victories as well as his Olympic triumph, his global image is still somewhat dwarfed by the other members of the Big Four. The values of the kit deals for the other top men include $140 million (£89 m) for Federer over 10 years, courtesy of Nike. Uniqlo have a contract worth $40 million (£25 m) over five years for Djokovic and he is an example of how to successfully move away from Adidas.
