Wimbledon 2015: Writers Awards – Best Female Player

With Wimbledon 2015 consigned to the history books, Serena Williams’ search for a career Grand Slam is very much alive. The American continues to dominate the sport, adding to her titles in Melbourne and Paris earlier in the year and breaking records along the way.

Her opponent in the final came in the form of 20th seed Garbine Muguruza, whose run captured the magic of the Championships. She was outplayed in her final match, but at 21 years of age has a bright future in the sport. It is always special when you feel you are watching a future star take her first big strides on the world stage.

More from Majors

As we have become accustomed to in recent years, some of the top seeds flattered to deceive at SW19, with a host of high profile early exits. This was balanced by some stunning displays that gripped the nation, with popular figures like Jelena Jankovic and even local favourite Heather Watson playing some inspired tennis.

Attention was being hauled this way and that, with news dominated by Eugenie Bouchard’s illegal bra and the female player’s grunting, but thankfully focus was shifted back to the tennis as Williams registered her sixth Wimbledon title, an achievement that clearly meant a lot to a player who will go down as the best female to play the game.

Here at Lob and Smash we have endeavoured to draw our own conclusions on the fascinating fortnight of tennis. To do so, the writers have each shared their own opinions on a variety of topics, adding their two cents to the key questions now that the tournament has run it’s course.
