Wimbledon Seeds Are Released

The seeds were released for Wimbledon earlier.  What were they and what do they hold for the tournament?

For starters, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are seeded first and second in the men’s draw at Wimbledon.  Most of the seeds are approximately according to ranking but there are some adjustments.  For example, Richard Gasquet is seeded seventh, which is above his current ranking of 10th in the world.  This does, however, make sense given that he has made two semifinals at Wimbledon, including in 2015, where he outlasted Stan Wawrinka in a quarterfinal match.

Of course, one notable name who would have been a high seed but is not at the tournament is two-time champion Rafael Nadal.  He withdrew recently due to a wrist injury.

On the women’s side at Wimbledon, it is pretty much exclusively based on ranking. 2015 champion Serena Williams will be seeded first while 2015 runner-up Garbine Muguruza will be seeded second.

More from Andy Murray

Two-time (2011 and 2014) champion Petra Kvitova is seeded 11th. Depending on how the draw shakes out at Wimbledon she could be a dangerous player to watch.

Here, from Sky Sports, is an article that lists all the seeds.

Qualifying has started at Wimbledon so we are getting close to the start of the third (and some would argue the most prestigious) major of the season. There are, of course, lots of interesting questions going into the tournament.

On the ATP side, after Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray faced off in the first two Grand Slam finals of the season, will they do so again?

On the WTA side, Serena Williams has been the runner-up at the first two Grand Slam tournaments. Can she win Wimbledon for the seventh time and finally tie Steffi Graf?

Stay tuned for the previews of the men’s and women’s singles which will be coming soon where I will offer my opinion on the above questions.
