The 2019 Australian Open is rapidly approaching. Looking at recent champs, the Grand Slam could easily see a brand new one emerge.
For much of the past two decades, Serena Williams has dominated women’s singles tennis; that has included action at the Australian Open. The American tennis legend has seven Grand Slam singles titles at the first major of the calendar year. Her first came back in 2003 and her most recent was in 2017. Victoria Azarenka notched back to back Australian Open titles in 2012 and 2013, but the tournament has otherwise seen a handful of one-off champs.
Last year, Caroline Wozniacki earned her first career major tournament title at Melbourne Park. She could be considered a favorite in 2019 but, odds are, the field is wide open.
Looking ahead to the upcoming WTA Tour, some players should remain atop the rankings. If healthy, Simona Halep will be in contention in any tournament she plays. Wozniacki is also someone to watch throughout the year. Angelique Kerber has seen a resurgence and ought to be a top contender in women’s singles.
Who will win the 2019 Australian Open title in women’s singles?
The rest of women’s tennis, however, is a toss-up. Several rising stars such as recent US Open champion Naomi Osaka could continue to make a splash.
Others such as American Sloane Stephens could make 2019 the year to cement her legacy as one of the next great players in the sport. Garbine Muguruza, Elina Svitolina, and others could do just the same. The Australian Open is the perfect major tournament to host a new champion in women’s singles tennis.
Wozniacki might be the defending champion and favorite heading into the 2019 Australian Open action. She is not, however, guaranteed a deep run at the major tournament. Halep could easily reach the finals again and go for her first at Melbourne Park. Plus, with women’s tennis seeing a brand new generation of stars overtake the WTA Tour, anything can happen. Check back to see if the first Grand Slam of 2019 will in fact see a new champion in women’s singles.
