The top player on the ATP Tour is off to a winning start at the 2019 Qatar Open. Novak Djokovic wins his first two matches in Doha.
Novak Djokovic enters the 2019 ATP Tour as the top player in men’s singles tennis. He is off to a winning start already at the Qatar Open in Doha. Cruising through his opening match against Damir Dzumhur, Djokovic went and followed it up with a harder fought three-set victory over Marton Fucsovics.
A former champion in Doha, Djokovic appears right at home. The Serbian tennis star won back to back singles titles there in 2016 and 2017.
Not only is Nole performing well on the men’s singles side, but he is already into the semifinals in men’s doubles at the Qatar Open. Alongside his younger brother Marko Djokovic, the world number one in men’s singles is seeing impressive success on the doubles side of the field. The two square off against David Goffin and Pierre-Hugues Herbert next.
Up next for Djokovic in men’s singles is Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia. Also still alive in Doha are Stan Wawrinka, Roberto Bautista Agut, and Tomas Berdych among others.
Djokovic ought to remain the heavy favorite moving forward in Doha. As the current world number one on the ATP Tour, and with all of the momentum he has as of late, Nole appears unstoppable. Plus, even if someone stops Djokovic before the finals at the Qatar Open, he has gotten his year off to a solid start. He, like everyone else on the tour, is looking for more and more momentum as action heads toward Melbourne Park.
Elsewhere on the ATP Tour, former world number one Rafael Nadal is addressing his year ahead. The Spanish great is strategically approaching the coming weeks due to health concerns as he wants to be in the best shape possible for the Australian Open. As of writing, Novak Djokovic remains OUR FAVORITE to take the title in men’s singles at Melbourne Park. Stay tuned to see how he finishes off action in Doha and then in the coming days at the Australian Open.
