The 2019 Australian Open is heading into the third round of play this week. Here’s a look at who’s still in the mix and who’s been upset.

Let’s start the Australian Open second round update with a look at the top seeds in both women’s and men’s singles. On the women’s singles side, Simona Halep entered the tournament as the top seed after finishing the 2018 WTA Tour as the end of year world number one. While her final months of last year were muddled with injury problems, Halep has rebounded at Melbourne Park.

The second round put her up against a surging young tennis star in Sofia Kenin though. Kenin took Halep to three sets but came up just short of what would have been the biggest upset of the slam so far. The world number one sneaks into the third round, winning 6-3 6-7 (5) 6-4.

On the men’s singles side of the action, Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic is the top seed and OUR FAVORITE to take the title this year. He enters the year fresh off of major wins at both Wimbledon and the US Open in 2018. A six-time champion at the Australian Open, he and the third seeded Roger Federer are staples at the event.

Djokovic saw an intriguing second round matchup with French tennis player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The two previously met during the 2010 Australian Open quarterfinals and, of course, the finals back in 2008 when Djokovic took the title. This time around, Djokovic cruises past Tsonga, winning 6-3 7-5 6-4. The top seed now sets up a fantastic matchup with rising men’s singles tennis star Denis Shapovalov.
