The 2019 Mexican Open reaches the semifinals this weekend in men’s singles. Here’s a look at the two upcoming matches.

Nick Kyrgios continues to defy the odds at the 2019 Mexican Open. He is one of the four remaining players in men’s singles this weekend in Acapulco. Kyrgios is coming off of a HUGE UPSET WIN over the top seeded Rafael Nadal in the round of 16. Then, the young Australian pushed forward and shocked the field yet again, defeating Swiss tennis great Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals. Kyrgios has incredible momentum right now.

American John Isner is the third seed in Acapulco. Isner takes on Kyrgios next at the event and this is something of a tossup. The two players have a 2-2 ATP singles match record against one another throughout their careers.

Isner’s run up to the semifinals is quite impressive. Even if his path might be somewhat objectively easier than Kyrgios’, he does have three strong wins over the likes of Adrian Mannarino, Sam Querrey, and John Millman.

Odds makers seem to slightly favor Kyrgios. Some by just one or two games. Even though this is the case, we’re going to pick the “underdog” in Isner and say he wins in three sets. This is a must watch match no matter who advances to the finals.

The second semifinals match features the tournament’s second seed in Alexander Zverev. The German tennis star takes on another young ATP player in Cameron Norrie next at the 2019 Mexican Open. Norrie’s run to the semis includes a major upset win over the fourth seeded Diego Schwartzman back in the round of 16. Zverev, however, is yet to drop a single set.

We have to favor the world number three is Zverev but Norrie has the potential to play spoiler. Given his performance thus far at the Mexican Open, we’ll take Zverev in straight sets but expect at least one tiebreak. The semifinals features three rising ATP stars and one accomplished veteran. The finals will only be more entertaining. Can Kyrgios continue to make headlines? Will Zverev earn his first ATP singles title on the year? Check back for all of the updates.
