It might sound strange to include a former world number one on this list, but Garbiñe Muguruza is among our sleeper tennis players for 2019.

Yes, Garbiñe Muguruza is a former world number one and arguably one of the best tennis players on the WTA Tour today. How could she be considered a sleeper pick any year? Well, when it comes down to it, Muguruza has slide from her top ranking in recent years. She is a two-time Grand Slam singles champion, but it’s been a while since those titles.

Muguruza won the 2016 French Open and then followed that up with a 2017 win at Wimbledon. Her career high ranking of world number one came back in 2017 and, as of writing, she comes in at the world number 17 position in women’s singles.

Two-time Grand Slam winner Garbiñe Muguruza can overtake the sport in a hurry.

At just 25-years-old, Muguruza is another example of a young player who is already so accomplished. Winning a single Grand Slam is hard enough and she’s done it twice. Strong early performances on the 2019 WTA Tour also show that she is plenty capable of retouching those career heights any moment now.

Earlier this year, the former world number one reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open and she made it to the quarterfinals at Indian Wells. There, she defeated the likes of Lauren Davis, Serena Williams, and Kiki Bertens before falling to…Bianca Andreescu. Muguruza is among a set of proven tennis players in women’s singles who can overtake the sport in a hurry.
