Karolina Pliskova is your champion in women’s singles tennis at the 2019 Italian Open. She completes a stellar week of play in Rome.
Former world number one Karolina Pliskova is one of the best players in women’s single tennis. She entered action at the 2019 Italian Open as the fourth seed. Not quite the favorite, Pliskova was near the top but had never taken the title in Rome before.
The Czech tennis star opened her tournament with a straight set win over Ajla Tomljanović. Then, she managed a hard-fought three-set win over up and coming American tennis player Sofia Kenin in the round of 16, setting up a huge match in the quarterfinals.
The Italian Open quarters saw Pliskova taking on Victoria Azarenka. While Vika has played intermittently on the WTA Tour since becoming a mother, she has remained an impressive player. Azarenka would fall to Pliskova, but the Czech needed to rally and win both the second and third sets to advance.
The semifinals pit Pliskova up against recent Morocco Open champion Maria Sakkari. The Greek tennis star is surging as of late and this was not expected to be an easy one. Still though, the fourth seed showed up to give her best and walked away with a fantastic straight set victory. She defeats Sakkari 6-4 6-4 to reach the finals.
Johanna Konta would be the player on the other side of the net during the 2019 Italian Open final in women’s singles. The British number one was fresh off of a huge win over recent Madrid Open champion Kiki Bertens. Konta, like Pliskova, had her own momentum that she was bringing into the championship match.
It is Karolina Pliskova who emerges victorious in the Italian Open final. Defeating Konta in straight sets, the Czech tennis star wins 6-3 6-4. She now must be considered someone to watch at the upcoming French Open. Pliskova, a former world number one, is one of the very best players in women’s singles yet to take a Grand Slam title. Could this be her year?
