GQ: Roger Federer beats Harry Styles, voted decade’s Most Stylish Man

Roger Federer had his fans to thank after he was voted GQ’s Most Stylish Man of the Decade, while rival Rafael Nadal collected some tennis awards.
Tennis star Roger Federer has beaten off competition from the likes of One Direction singer Harry Styles to be named GQ’s Most Stylish Man of the Decade.
High-profile fashion magazine GQ this week held a contest to determine the most stylish man of the last 10 years from a list of 16 nominations that included stars from sports, movies and music.
The competition was held in a similar style to a tennis event, with knockout matches reducing the size of the field before an eventual final.
Federer defeated actor Timothee Chalamet in the final, having got the better of Styles, Jonah Hill and A$AP Rocky in matches earlier this week.
Other stars involved in the contest included Kanye West, LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, David Beckham and Ryan Gosling.
But it was Federer who came out on top, his fans rallying to the cause after he posted on Instagram to say it would be his ideal Christmas gift to be crowned the winner.
His win over Styles is perhaps most impressive given the size of the singer’s fanbase from his time with 1D.
Summarising the result after Chalamet, who had ended the hopes of LeBron in the semifinals, was beaten by the Swiss star, GQ paid tribute to Federer’s style, tradition and simplicity.
"“Fed fans assembled with haste, organizing so thoroughly that we’d gladly put them in charge of our next presidential campaign.“So: what can we learn? At least a few things. First, that consistency counts. Roger has been dressing like a champ for the full decade; at 38, he knows what it takes to show up and look good.“Second: while we’re firmly in the no-rules era of menswear, there’s still plenty of appetite for a guy who just looks really good in a simple suit. No silver diaphanous layers, no glittery hoodies, no advanced mid-layer garments, just a suit. (And sometimes some crispy tennis whites.)“Some of the guys on this list made their reputations on red carpets; others, in paparazzi shots. Roger Federer, on the other hand, has a case for most stylish man of the decade thanks to something as simple as this: When the guy puts on his Wimbledon whites, he stands basically alone.“It’s not about his clothes so much as the righteously relaxed, preternaturally confident way he moves in them. (Also: Dude is a Bond-level tux wearer.)”"
While Federer was celebrating that Christmas gift from the fans who voted for him, Nadal was also scooping up some accolades after his superb 2019 season on the ATP Tour.
He already knew that his year-end number one ranking would earn him the ATP Player of the Year award automatically, but he also landed another gong at the 2019 awards.
The Spaniard was voted the winner of the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award by his fellow players.
It was the third time overall and second straight year Nadal won the vote. He defeated fellow nominees Federer, Diego Schwartzman and Dominic Thiem in the award the ATP says is given for “his fair play, professionalism and integrity on and off the court”.
Nadal was also this week named ITF Player of the Year, with Ash Barty scooping the women’s honour.

Federer, meanwhile, was the ATP Fans’ Favorite for a 17th consecutive season. Andy Murray was Comeback Player of the Year, Jannik Sinner claimed Newcomer of the Year, Matteo Berrettini was the Most Improved Player and Kevin Anderson took home the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award.
The coach of Daniil Medvedev, Gilles Cervara, was ATP Coach of the Year.
Nadal is currently playing at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship and will meet Stefanos Tsitsipas in Saturday’s final.
He won his semifinal in comfortable fashion against Karen Khachanov, while in-form Greek Tsitsipas defeated Novak Djokovic in three thrilling sets.
After that match, Nadal will turn his attention to leading Spain, who he just guided to Davis Cup glory, in the ATP Cup.
Roger Federer is preparing for his next appearance at the Australian Open, where he will now have some added pressure to turn up looking the part given the new title he has picked up this offseason.
