No offense to Marcos Giron, but he was likely one of the easiest opponents Alexander Zverev could have had in the third round of Wimbledon 2026. Giron is 32 years old and has only won one title in his long career, and that was an ATP 250 tournament in 2024. Zverev has even more confidence after winning his first-ever major at the 2026 French Open.
The first set was easy for the German. He served with his normal high-end precision and was simply much higher level than the American. Whatever Giron tried to do wasn't going to work, it seemed. He was a grinder we should all admire, but he wasn't ever going to touch Zverev.
That made what unfolded in the second set a bit surprising. Zverev faced break points in two different games, though he fought through each one. Meanwhile, Giron was having a slightly easier time holding serve. The set finished in a tie-break, and that's where the American's hopes were crushed.
Alexander Zverev takes another step to Wimbledon glory by defeating Marcos Giron
The German took the tie-break 7-4 and even led 6-3. Giron had very little chance once in the decider, and he appeared to give everything he could to take the set. His body language at the beginning of the third set told tennis fans watching all they needed to know. Giron was going to be defeated, and he knew it.
At the beginning of the third set, Zverev held easily and then got a break of Giron. Any comeback at this point was impossible, though Marcos Giron managed a hold in a tense game to get to 1-3. The American had reached the third round of Wimbledon for the first time in his career in 2026, but he wasn't going to reach the fourth round.
Somewhat surprisingly, however. Alexander Zverev has never made it further than the fourth round at Wimbledon himself. With another win, he will reach the quarterfinals, which should give him even more confidence that he can win his second straight Grand Slam title. He is doing things he has never done before.
The third set unexpectedly tightened. Zverev was broken midway through, a concern that will likely grow later in the tournament and against tougher competition. At 4-5 with Giron serving, however, Zverev got another break to finish the set and the match.
He finished with 17 aces to Giron's one. He also finished with 39 winners and 39 unforced errors, while the less aggressive Giron finished with just 22 and 27, respectively.
In the fourth round, Zverev will play the winner of the Jiri Lehecka and Jaume Munar match (Lehecka was comfortably ahead at the time of this writing). Lehecka is having the best year of his career and will also be trying to push past the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time.
