Flavio Cobolli has a great game for clay. He moves around the court well and can keep points alive. He proved what a threat he could be on clay by reaching the final of the 2026 French Open, where he lost in five sets to Alexander Zverev.
Grass courts, though, offer a much different challenge for the Italian. Cobolli's game isn't to serve and volley, but his first-round opponent at the Halle Open (otherwise known as the Terra Wortmann Open to tournament sponsors), Frances Tiafoe, can be successful on the surface.
While the American's best performance at Wimbledon has been to only reach the fourth round, that is still better than he has done at the French Open or the Australian Open. When Tiafoe is serving well, he's difficult to defeat, especially on faster surfaces.
Frances Tiafoe quickly ends Flavio Cobolli's run at the Halle Open
Cobolli learned that lesson early against the American. While Tiafoe landed just 53 percent of his first-set serves, he won all those points. He also won 67 percent of his second serves in claiming a 6-2 win. The American wasn't in just a tick better form than the Italian; the match wasn't close at all early.
In the second set, the French Open runner-up was able to extend points a bit more on his serve, keeping pace with Tiafoe's quick holds of service through the midway point of the set. One watching might logically have thought that if Cobolli could only get a break, he would have righted himself enough to get a come-from-behind victory.
The ultimate problem was that he couldn't. Tiafoe kept holding, and he eventually forced a tie-break. Cobolli came up with the first mini-break, but that didn't last long. Partly because the American either could see a tell or guessed correctly on the Italian's second serve.
After getting the first two points in the tie-break, Flavio Cobolli would only get two more points, and Frances Tiafoe took it 7-4. Cobolli will now have less time on court to try for a successful run at Wimbledon, while Tiafoe might be beginning to get in better form overall just before the grass-court major.
Tiafoe should also be favored to win his next match. He will face the winner of Tallon Griekspoor and Sho Shimabukuro in the second round of the Hall Open.
