Leanrer Tien has nothing to be ashamed of. He simply ran into an in-form Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Indian Wells Masters and, as most players would, the American lost. The match wasn't close.

In the first set, the Italian did have to battle a bit on his serve, twice facing deuce points, but he managed to come through as champions do. He took the set 6-1, and Tien wasn't playing poorly. He is simply not yet ready to win matches against Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz when the two best players on the ATP tour are performing at their best.

Tien landed 72 percent of his first serves, but he only won 44 percent of those points. The reason that the Italian is ranked No. 2, and was ranked No. 1 for much of 2024 and 2025, was that he is arguably the best returner in the sport. He might win most of his service games, but he steals one's soul when returning serve.

The second set was even worse. Tien hit four winners but 16 unforced errors, and he struggled to land his first serve. He managed to win another game in the set, but that was all, dropping set two 6-2.

Still, Learner Tien was a winner at Indian Wells. He moved up to No. 21 in the live ATP rankings and will likely get inside the top 15 soon. He has the skill set to challenge for high-end tournaments, but whether he can improve enough to compete with Sinner or Alcaraz is unknown. Every player is asking themselves that same question.

For Jannik Sinner, any points gained at Indian Wells are like free money. He was suspended at this point in 2025 for three months after failing two drug tests in 2024. He didn't accrue points during that time, of course, so he has no points to defend. He still trails Carlos Alcaraz by a large margin, but can make up ground with good play ahead of May.

He will next face Alexander Zverev in the semifinals. Zverev is also playing well. Neither has ever won Indian Wells, however.
