Novak Djokovic drops some truth about what his priorities are now
By Lee Vowell
24 Grand Slam victories and one Olympic gold medal. That is really more than anyone can ask a tennis player to ever achieve. In fact, no one has ever achieved more than Novak Djokovic has and those are his statistics. Is he done playing? Not quite.
Djokovic is currently trying to help get Serbia into the knock-out stages at the Davis Cup. By the time you read this, Serbia has likely dispatched Greece and should be well on its way. Last year, Serbia played Italy in the semifinals and lost partly due to Djokovic losing to Jannik Sinner. Djokovic wants a bit of revenge this year.
To be fair, Novak Djokovic has already helped Serbia win the Davis Cup once before and that was in 2010. Still, one has a feeling that he might want to end his career as a winner in the Davis Cup. He did not win a Grand Slam this year but finally won at the Olympics. At 37 years old, there is nothing more to prove.
Novak Djokovic could be inching closer to retirement
He does not care about winning another ATP Finals this year, either. The Serb has won the year-end tournament seven times, which, like with almost anything Djokovic, is a record. He won the event last year which broke the tie he had for the number of wins at the ATP Finals with Roger Federer. Djokovic is the best player ever and there should be little doubt of that.
Speaking at the Davis Cup this week, Djokovic got real about what the end of 2024 might look like for him and what his priorities are. Davis Cup, yes. ATP Finals, no.
The Serb said, "ATP Finals are not my goal this year. That and rankings are not my main interest. I won everything I possibly could and main priorities are Grand Slams and playing for Serbia. I need some rest to figure out what I want and how much."
Is the end near for Novak Djokovic? Likely. That is not because he cannot compete for majors anymore. He was in the final of Wimbledon this year, of course. But after so much winning throughout his career, his drive to keep up his run of success might not be there and that makes sense. 2025 could very well be his final year on the ATP tour.
