No one wanted this. Not the players involved or most tennis fans. Taylor Fritz playing Jack Draper in the first round of Wimbledon 2026 is a terrible thing to have happen. The match is also potentially one of the best opening-round matchups in recent history.
Fans might feel conflicted. Having Fritz play Draper in the quarterfinals would be epic. The shame is not that the players are going up against one another, but that they are doing it so early at the grass-court major.
Wimbledon couldn't truly help the issue, though. Draper has missed too much time over the last year, and because of that, his ranking has plummeted. Even after reaching the semifinals at the Eastbourne Open, where he lost to Ugo Humbert, the Brit will be ranked outside the top 100 when the new rankings are released on Monday.
Taylor Fritz playing Jack Draper in the first round of Wimbledon is both a shame and a dream matchup
Still, the lefty has a brilliant serve and excellent backhand, and if he reaches top form, he could be a real threat to make a deep run at his home major. Grass hasn't yet been his best surface, though he did win the Boss Open in Stuttgart in 2024, but he has the game to win Wimbledon.
So does Fritz, who has one of the best serves on the ATP tour when he is in top form. He moves around the court well and has flashed the ability to volley well. He's also knocked on the door of greatness in London, as he has reached the quarterfinals twice and the semifinals just last year.
Fritz and Draper are no strangers to each other on the court. They have played five times, with the Brit leading the head-to-head 3-2. He also got the victory the one time the two met on a grass court. That was at Queen's Club in 2022, as Draper won easily 6-3, 6-2.
The irony is simply that while either Taylor Fritz or Jack Draper could make a run at the title at Wimbledon 2026, that run will have to start with a must-watch first-round match when one potential winner of the major will take out another. Instead of a late-round matchup, one of the players will be sent home far too early.
Both are trending in the right direction ahead of Wimbledon. Draper made the semis in Eastbourne while being newly coached by the legendary Andy Murray. Fritz reached the finals of the Halle Open and the Boss Open, though he lost both.
