Frances Tiafoe sees an unexpected opening round upset at the 2019 New York Open. Is this something to be worried about moving forward?

American tennis star Frances Tiafoe is OUT of the 2019 New York Open. His tournament barely got started before he finds himself moving on. The second seed was a late entry into the event but entered as one of the players to beat alongside top seeded John Isner.

The second seeded Tiafoe falls to Jason Jung who takes their match 6-3, 7-5. No-one saw the upset coming. Is this something to be worried about?

Short answer… no, not at all. Tiafoe is coming off of a tremendous performance at the 2019 Australian Open. At Melbourne Park, he reached the quarterfinals where he would fall to Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal. His quarterfinals run was his best to date at the first Grand Slam of the calendar year.

Tiafoe is setting his sights on the action ahead. He remains extremely optimistic and, rightfully so, acknowledged that he has already seen incredible success in 2019. He can’t let one loss become more than it needs to be.

"“I’m just gonna go to Delray next week and try to have a good week. It’s still early in the year, and I’ve had success already, so I’m totally still fine. And I’m working hard, so it’s not like it’s the end of the world.” – Frances Tiafoe following New York Open loss"

With the young American out of the mix, Isner remains the favorite moving forward at the New York Open. Isner defeats Bernard Tomic to reach the quarterfinals where he takes on Jordan Thompson next.

Previously, we gave the edge to Isner who is in need of a bounce back run very soon. He opened the year with a 0-2 ATP singles match record before taking down Tomic in straight sets. Now, Isner has a chance to really regain his momentum. While Tiafoe is ready to move on and not dwell on the New York Open loss, others such as Isner remain focused in Uniondale.
