The 2019 Dubai Tennis Championships reaches the quarterfinals this week. Here is a breakdown of the upcoming matches.

Back to back defending champion Elina Svitolina is among those players who reaches the quarterfinals at the Dubai Tennis Championships. The Ukrainian tennis star is the current WTA Finals winner and entered the action in Dubai as the sixth seed. She takes on veteran Carla Suárez Navarro next at the event.

Suárez Navarro is fresh off of a win over Kristina Mladenovic. The French tennis star had upset the tournament’s top seed in Naomi Osaka, shocking the Australian Open champion. It is Suárez Navarro who bests Mladenovic in the round of 16 though.

The matchup between Svitolina and Suárez Navarro is a tough one to call but we have to give the edge to the defending champion. Svitolina is yet to drop a single set and her most recent win came against two-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one Garbine Muguruza.

Svitolina’s impressive play against Muguruza is proof that Svitolina came to defend her title. She knocked out the former world number one in straight sets, winning 6-1, 6-2.

Another former Dubai Tennis champion in Petra Kvitova also reaches the quarterfinals. She is the second seed this year and faces Slovak tennis player Viktória Kužmová next. Kvitova must be considered the favorite but Kužmová is coming off of upset wins over the likes of seventh seeded Kiki Bertens and the surging Sofia Kenin.

The field is extremely deep this year in Dubai. Yet another former world number one remains alive in the quarterfinals. Karolína Plíšková is the tournament’s fourth seed and she comes up against veteran tennis star Hsieh Su-wei. This is a highly anticipated match as the Taiwanese veteran is coming off of a huge win over Angelique Kerber.

Then of course there is our current pick to take the title in Simona Halep. The 2015 champion is just one of the many former world number ones still in the mix and she is red hot right now. Halep knocked out Canadian Eugenie Bouchard and then Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko. She has not dropped a single set and takes on Belinda Bencic next. Bencic is coming off of a huge three set win over the eighth seeded Aryna Sabalenka. The Swiss star rallied back to win a third set tiebreak.
