French Open 2025: Jack Draper gives young Joao Fonseca a tennis lesson

A real threat.

Joao Fonseca is going to be a very good ATP player. He was ranked as the top junior for a bit, and is only 18 years old. He will likely challenge for titles soon enough, but not at the 2025 French Open.

The young Brazilian faced an in-form Jack Draper in the third round, and Draper quickly set the tone for who was going to be boss of the match. He overpowered Fonseca from both wings, his bombastic forehand keeping the Brazilian always on the defense and playing from his heels. There was little the Brazilian could do.

It did not help Fonseca that Draper was brutally effective with his second serve, winning 61 percent of them. While he landed just 58 percent of his first serves and had four double faults, he won 92 percent of his first serves. He was never broken, but broke Fonseca six times.

The match was so one-sided that Draper might have made a statement that he could be the first British man to win the French Open since its debut in 1891. He is also staking a claim to be the best British player since Andy Murray was playing his best. And he is just 23 years old.

He moves well enough, even though he is more powerful than graceful, to be a problem for any player, except maybe Carlos Alcaraz. His punishing forehand is difficult to challenge.

Fonseca moves well, but the beatdown that Draper gave him will help him in the future. Currently, he is no match for the ATP No. 5. Draper has already had a career-best French Open as he had not made it out of the first round in two previous editions.

After defeating Fonseca 6-2 6-4 6-2, Draper will next play the winner of the Alexander Bublik and Henrique Rocha match in the fourth round.
